Online care is a way to discuss a health concern from home. Compare the medicine, the visit, and the whole bill. [ Compare ways to get care ](/quick-card/) Medicine Visit Full bill Look at the parts, then the program. ## Peptide is a description, not a care plan A peptide is a small chain of joined parts, like beads on a string. These same parts also make proteins. Calling a medicine a peptide does not name the illness it treats. As of September 2026, U.S. rules distinguish approved drugs, custom-made medicines, and products sold with a research label. [ Note A ](#note-a) ## Start by asking which kind of product it is ### An approved drug In the U.S., reviewing medicines for particular uses is the role of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For specific uses, semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) had FDA approval as of September 2026. [ Note B ](#note-b) ### A made-to-order medicine Compounding means a pharmacist, a professional who prepares medicines, or a doctor makes a medicine for a patient’s needs. As of September 2026, compounded drugs lacked FDA approval. These drugs reach patients without a prior FDA review of their quality, their safety, or whether they work. [ Note A ](#note-a) ### A research label In advice checked in September 2026, FDA warns people to avoid weight-loss products sold to people under a research label. A vague answer is a reason to ask again. The care inside an online program U.S. care · September 2026. # Choose the visit that fits the question. Care can start through telehealth—a health visit by video, phone, or written messages—or an in-person clinic. ## Compare how the conversation happens Ways to have the visit Type of visit How you talk A question to ask Live video Talk back and forth on a call. If I need an exam or test, how is it arranged? Written review Send your history, then read a reply. Can we both ask follow-up questions? In person Discuss your concern in the room. Who handles questions between visits? ## Your location is part of the care As of September 2026, online doctors needed a licence or another form of legal permission in the state you occupied at the time of the visit. If you will be travelling, ask whether the doctor has permission to provide care in the state you will be visiting from. [ Note A ](#note-a) ## A form needs room for a conversation A fixed online question list cannot by itself support a treatment decision. This is the Federation of State Medical Boards’ position in guidance checked in September 2026. This group writes guidance for state medical boards, which oversee doctors. The group supports first visits by written messages only if they meet the same care requirements as a visit in person. Ask whether the doctor can ask you more questions and arrange any exam or test needed to assess you. State rules still decide what is allowed, as of September 2026. [ Note B ](#note-b) ## Ask how an exam or test will be arranged Board guidance reviewed in September 2026 requires doctors to arrange necessary tests or refer you to a person able to carry them out. A vague answer is a reason to ask again. The care inside an online program U.S. care · September 2026. # Ask for answers you can check. Keep the question short. Ask for a plain answer, then a written copy of the details you may need later. ## Name the exact medicine What is the drug’s own name, beyond a program label? Has the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved this product, or is it made to order? The FDA reviews drugs for specific uses. Compounded means made by a pharmacist, a professional who prepares medicines, or a doctor for a patient’s needs. A prescription is a medicine order from a health professional with permission to prescribe. The person writing it is your prescriber. [ Note A ](#note-a) ## If it is compounded, ask why Which need of mine cannot be met by an approved product? FDA advice, checked in September 2026, is to use compounding when an approved drug cannot meet the patient’s need. As of September 2026, federal law limited making copies of medicines already sold when done often or in large amounts. A copy here is a version made to order of a medicine already on sale. FDA looks at whether the main drug ingredient is the same, the amount is similar, and it is taken the same way. A prescriber could write down how a change to the medicine made an important difference for that specific patient. How would my medicine change, and what difference would that make for my care? Paying less is not enough to meet this rule. [ Note B ](#note-b) ## Find out who is responsible Who will do my assessment, and where can I verify their licence? What is the name of the pharmacy that will make or send the medicine? Who answers me after the visit? In information checked in September 2026, the FDA notes that online patients may not know who made their compounded medicine. [ Note A ](#note-a) ## Get the follow-up plan before paying How do I ask about a problem once the medicine arrives? What is the next step if this treatment is not right for me? If an in-person examination is needed, what will happen next? FDA information checked in September 2026 flags services with no doctor available for questions after the medicine arrives. [ Note C ](#note-c) ## Ask for the complete bill Which costs are separate? What changes after any opening offer? What will another supply cost, and how do I stop the program? Get the total in writing, with separate lines for the care fee, medicine, tests, and delivery. Match the same items when comparing offers. ## Keep the care fee and drug bill separate A small sample of online weight-loss services advertised a monthly care fee, with medicine charged separately, as of September 2026. The price shown most prominently may be a discount for the first month or for paying several months ahead. Care fee Medicine Any tests Any delivery Full bill Ask which parts are included. [ Note F ](#note-f) ## Read the limits on a low opening price Self-pay means paying outside insurance. $199 per month was an opening self-pay offer for semaglutide (Ozempic), checked in September 2026. The offer was for new U.S. patients aged 18 or older, for the first two one-month supplies. Strength means the amount of drug in a dose; the label shows it in milligrams (mg). The opening price covered just 0.25 mg strength and 0.5 mg strength. For later one-month supplies, the September 2026 price was $349. This covered 0.25 mg strength, 0.5 mg strength, and 1 mg strength. The price was $499 per month at 2 mg under those terms. The offer’s printed end date is December 31, 2026. Under the offer’s rules, you could not ask insurance to pay you back. The payments also could not count toward an insurance deductible. The plan’s deductible is the sum you pay before it begins sharing covered costs. [ Note A ](#note-a) ## Ask insurance about the reason for treatment As of September 2026, Medicare Part D, its prescription-drug benefit, excluded drugs used for weight loss. Medicare Part D may pay for the same drug for another accepted health condition, including type 2 diabetes or certain heart risks. Your plan still decides whether it will pay and may need to agree before treatment starts. A plan’s agreement to pay before treatment starts is called prior authorization. [ Note E ](#note-e) ## Medicare’s temporary program is separate As of September 2026, people who qualified for a temporary Medicare program paid $50 for a one-month supply of certain weight-loss drugs. This patient payment is called a copay. Mark the program’s two dates: July 1, 2026 for its start; December 31, 2027 for its end. Its drug payments are separate from the usual Medicare Part D insurance payments. The $50 payment did not count toward Medicare Part D’s annual limit for your spending on covered drugs, under the September 2026 terms. These payments are extra and do not bring you closer to reaching that Part D limit. Under the September 2026 rules, you had to be at least 18 and meet limits based on your height, weight, and health conditions. Your type of drug plan and its past payments for these drugs also affected whether you could join. This temporary program excluded people with type 2 diabetes; their medicine remained under the usual Part D plan. Anyone whose Part D plan had paid for a drug included in this program during 2026 could not join that year. Ask the health professional who writes your prescriptions and your plan to check all the rules in Note C. [ Note B ](#note-b) [ Note C ](#note-c) [ Note D ](#note-d) ## Check who can use a savings offer As of September 2026, commercial insurance was required for copay cards covering semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound). Commercial insurance means a private health plan, such as coverage from work. They excluded Medicare, Medicaid, and military coverage. Separate offers from drug makers for paying without insurance could have different rules. Ask whether an offer is tied to insurance or is a price for paying cash. Check the product claims, the prescription, and the pharmacy behind them. Keep the answers in writing so you can return to them. The FDA, the Food and Drug Administration, reviews specific medicines for specific uses. ## A prescription cannot be optional A prescription is a medicine order from a health professional with permission to prescribe. As of September 2026, U.S. law required this order before a pharmacy could give out a prescription medicine. [ Note A ](#note-a) ## An approval claim needs to match the product A custom-made drug described as FDA-approved is a false claim, under FDA guidance checked in September 2026. A drug-making business can register with FDA, and a drug can appear on an FDA list. As of September 2026, a business registration or drug listing did not establish FDA approval for either the business or its drug. Ask for the exact medicine name and a record showing that FDA approved that product. [ Note B ](#note-b) ## A research label does not make it treatment In advice checked in September 2026, FDA warns people to avoid weight-loss products sold for human use with research-only labels. Their contents are of unknown quality and may cause harm. FDA’s warning on unapproved weight-loss products names the drugs retatrutide and cagrilintide. FDA had not found either safe and shown to work for any illness, as of September 2026. Ask whether either name appears in the program’s medicine list. As of September 2026, FDA said federal law did not allow pharmacies or doctors to make either drug to order. [ Note C ](#note-c) ## Check the pharmacy in a public record FDA’s state search, checked in September 2026, links to your state’s list of licensed pharmacies. FDA advises avoiding an online pharmacy that is missing from that state list. Being on the list means the pharmacy has a state licence, or permission to provide medicines. It does not show whether the pharmacy gives out medicines correctly. Before paying, get the pharmacy’s full name. [ Note D ](#note-d) ## An injection needs its own clear instructions In information checked in September 2026, FDA reported mistakes in the amount of made-to-order semaglutide used, with some people needing hospital care. If any part of the label is unclear, ask whoever wrote the prescription to explain it. [ Note C ](#note-c) ## Check storage for the exact product Storage needs vary by medicine; not every peptide belongs in a fridge. Ask the pharmacy how to keep this medicine at home and what to do if its delivery arrives damaged or too warm. ## Severe allergic reactions need urgent help Severe allergic reactions are emergencies and may include trouble breathing or swelling of the face, tongue, or eyes. Call 911 for severe symptoms, according to MedlinePlus information checked in September 2026. Patients can also use MedWatch, FDA’s service for reporting medicine problems, as described in information checked in September 2026. A drug record, a state record, and a warning letter each answer a different question. Use the notes below to see what each can tell you. The agency that reviews drug products is the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA. ## Approval belongs to the exact product The National Drug Code Directory is FDA’s list of drug products and their identifying codes. As of September 2026, being in this list did not mean FDA had approved a medicine. Each listed product has an identifying code, often called an NDC number. A product’s code is not an approval decision. Find the exact drug name and check whether it is taken as a pill, a shot, or another form. Also check what illness FDA approved that product to treat. [ Note A ](#note-a) ## A licence record answers who may practise A state medical board is the state body that gives doctors permission to practise medicine and can take action against them. Records checked in September 2026 showed whether a doctor had a licence and any public penalties or accusations of breaking the medical board’s rules. A “clean” record means it shows no public penalty or formal accusation from the medical board. It does not rate the quality of the doctor’s care. The Federation of State Medical Boards has a state-board directory, checked in September 2026. [ Note B ](#note-b) [ Note C ](#note-c) ## A pharmacy record is a separate check State pharmacy boards give pharmacies permission to operate. FDA linked to these state licence searches in information checked in September 2026. Use the pharmacy’s name, then match the licence record to the name you were given. [ Note D ](#note-d) ## A warning letter raises concerns at a point in time As of September 2026, FDA warned that later contact with a company could change the concerns raised in its warning letter. A warning letter says FDA believes a company has broken a rule. It is not a final decision by a court. If no letter is listed, the company may simply never have been reviewed. [ Note E ](#note-e) ## A report does not prove a drug caused harm FDA’s public reports can flag a problem, but do not prove the drug caused it, under guidance checked in September 2026. These reports cannot tell you how often the problem happens. That limits what a list of reports can tell you about your own chance of a problem.
